BOBBY CREMINS [ College of Charleston ]
“When we got the invite to this tournament, I was hesitant; we have a young team and I wasn’t sure if we could play with some of those teams. But we continue to learn from tournaments like these. I never want to put that kind of pressure on my teams, but at times we’re going to play in tournaments where we’re overmatched. Tournaments like the Puerto Rico Tip-Off are great. As coaches we all get uptight about wins and losses. At my age I’m past that. If an event can help your program develop—win, lose or draw—it’s a plus, and the Tip-Off was great to be a part of.”

TOM PENDERS [ Houston ]
“The Puerto Rico Tip-Off has the makings to be the premier preseason tournament. I’ve been to Maui and a lot of different tournaments in my 34 years of coaching. Number one, Puerto Rico is such a beautiful island, and the Coliseo is gorgeous facility—a place where fans will want to come to—particularly fans of teams from the mid-west to the east coast. The Puerto Rico Tip-Off, along with the Maui Classic, should be the premier preseason tournament.”

JOHN PELPHREY [ Arkansas ]
“I have been very impressed. The facility is awesome. The hotel—the way it’s set up, with access to the beach, was outstanding. We had good teams, and really good coaching. It was cool to see some old friends here; my son hung out with [VCU coach] Anthony Grant’s kid. The way it was run, the opportunity to be on TV, I just think this was really worth everybody’s while.”

ANTHONY GRANT [ Va. Commonwealth University]
“The Puerto Rico Tip-Off was a great tournament. Certainly if we’re invited back I would love to come back. Anytime you get a chance to play in this type of venue—against this type of competition—for us it’s terrific. We had a chance to learn about our team here, and I’m always for that. Overall, everything—from the hotel accommodations to the travel arrangements—was just first-class, and we’re glad to have been a part of it.”

TIM WELSH [ Providence ]
“I think this is one of the outstanding preseason tournaments that you can play in—not only for the venue, which is spectacular, but with the teams involved you know the level of competition is going to be high. And with ESPN’s organization being involved, playing here has done a lot of our guys this early in the season, and they’d love to come back anytime to Puerto Rico.”

FRAN DUNPHY [ Temple ]
“The Puerto Rico Tip-Off was a great four days for us. I thought Puerto Rico was a great venue to come to, and ESPN is a class organization. We knew as soon as we joined his field that it would be a well-run, top-notch tournament. Our kids had a great time. I’d be happy—as well our athletic program—to be a part of any other preseason event that ESPN has in the future.”

MATT BRADY [ Marist ]
"Even though we went 0-3, the Puerto Rico Tip-Off was a terrific event. One win would have been better but certainly the level of competition was great, and will only improve in years to come. The games were competitive, and just as important the hotel was excellent and the event was professionally run. The future of this event is excellent. It's a very good and easy location for fans of Eastern and Southern schools, and it's a tourist location people are aware of."
